CEBU, Philippines — Wilson Gloria Jr., Cebu City's representative to Mister Friendship International Philippines 2024, felt pressured to clinch the title for two reasons: last year's winner, Vince Drexsil Tudtud, also hails from Cebu City, and this edition was held on his home turf.

“It's a good thing because it makes me strive harder and improve myself. Since August, I made sure to prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally,” the 23-year-old model and content creator told The FREEMAN after the finals.

While he did not secure a back-to-back win, Gloria Jr. finished second as Mister Friendship Ambassador 2024, Sunday during the pageant's finals at WaterWorld Cebu in Mandaue City.

During the Q&A, Gloria Jr. recalled how a friend changed his perspective when asked about the most important quality a Mister Friendship International titleholder should possess.

“I believe that one of the qualities of a true Mister Friendship is being optimistic. I’m someone who strives hard despite challenges. I always see the positive side of every challenge, and I want to tell that story,” he shared.

“When I was young, I was bullied for being overweight. People called me ugly and fat, and I lost hope and confidence. But a friend once told me, ‘Be yourself and don’t ever give up, because if you believe in yourself, no one can ever bring you down.’”

“Now, here I am, standing in front of you, bringing those words of wisdom despite the negativity and hatred I’ve faced. I’m still striving and pursuing my dreams. Winning this title isn’t just a personal achievement, it’s a platform to inspire young people. If we live in a world that values friendship and brotherhood, we will live in a world full of love and unity.”

Gloria Jr. considered this his proudest moment of the night. “I’m not actually good at public speaking because I have stage fright. So I’m proud of myself for practicing and overcoming that,” he explained.

As the Ambassador title-holder, Gloria Jr. is set to compete in an international pageant, which has yet to be disclosed.

Tudtud, a close friend of Gloria Jr. said, “He’s already good at communicating. My advice to Wilson is to practice more because there’s a lot more he can show.”

The main title of Mister Friendship International Philippines 2024 went to Jansen Kenley See from Misamis Occidental, a 23-year-old Civil Engineering student at the University of San Carlos. In 2023, he was also named Misters of Filipinas Talisay-Tourism.

See was asked during the Q&A how he would use social media to foster positive connections and promote inclusivity.

“In this digital age, social media can be good or bad, depending on how we use it. If I were to use social media, I would promote diversity and inclusivity, which aligns with my advocacy for a healthy lifestyle. I believe that maintaining physical and mental well-being should be our priority,” he said.

“I hope to inspire people to prioritize their health so that, in turn, we can create stronger and more vibrant connections. Let’s build a world where fitness not only benefits our bodies but also strengthens our friendships.”

See was likewise awarded Best in Formal Wear in his elegant black tuxedo designed by Elmer De Venancio.

He will represent the Philippines at Mister Friendship International 2024 this December in Taiwan. Despite the short preparation time, he is determined to bring home the crown.

Mister Friendship International President Joe Kampol Thongchai, who flew from Thailand to Cebu to serve as one of the judges, believes See is a strong contender.

“He has a solid team, as seen in his wardrobe and the way he carries himself. He should just be himself and be proud to represent the Philippines,” Thongchai told The FREEMAN.

Tudtud advised See to stay focused and make necessary sacrifices.

“He won the title, and now it’s time to commit,” Tudtud said. “During my reign, I had to sacrifice my board exams to compete in Thailand. I also had only a few months to prepare, so he should commit, be responsible, and be disciplined.”

The rest of the top five include Kyle Brent Kimayong from Baguio City, who earned the title Mister Friendship Tourism 2024, with Gabrielle Nicholas De Paz of Tacloban and Josh Harold De Leon of Batangas finishing as second and third runners-up, respectively.

Three Cebu candidates who made it to the Top 15 were Jan Echavarria from Mandaue City, Mark Anthony Guerra from Carcar City, and Michael Enicuela from Daanbantayan.

Echavarria bagged most of the corporate awards, such as Ambassador of Waterworld Cebu.

Reflecting on this year’s candidates, Thongchai said, “I’m so happy to be part of this event in Cebu. From the day I arrived to the finals night, I saw a lot of ranks being switched constantly. All the candidates showed great potential.” — (FREEMAN)
