CEBU, Philippines — Sue Ramirez, lead star of the upcoming WeTV Original series “Boyfriend No. 13”, has a fascination for astrology. But unlike her character in the romantic-comedy who is obsessed with navigating life based on zodiac signs, she never lets her decisions be influenced by how the stars happen to be aligned.
“Palagi akong tumitingin ng Zodiac sign. Tinitingnan ko talaga kung compatible kaya ‘tong guy na ito for me,” the 24-year-old actress began in a virtual conference Wednesday.
“Yung boyfriend ko ngayon is Libra, and Libra is one of the most incompatible signs with a Cancer [Sue’s Zodiac], but it’s how you make it work,” said Sue, who is dating actor Javi Benitez.
Sue thinks Zodiac signs can provide guidance on how to handle some problems and might prepare one for the predicted traits of another, but should never dictate or be a deal-breaker in relationships.
“Nakakatulong siya for me kasi parang ‘ay oo nga ‘ganun lang talaga siya.’ Iintindihin mo siya kasi nabasa mo sa Zodiac na baka ‘ganun lang talaga siya,” she explained.
Asked if she has ever changed her personal style for other people, including her boyfriend, Sue believes that “women should be able to wear whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they want.”
“I think men should respect whatever it is that their girlfriends want to wear. I think very protective lang sila but at the end of the day, hindi natin dapat bino-box ‘yung mga babae. Hindi na kami dapat nag-a-adjust eh. At this point [in] 2021, dapat sanay na ‘yung mga tao. Dapat hindi na kami binabastos, dapat kapag naka two-piece kami, hindi bastos ang tingin sa amin.”
Sue hopes to contribute in educating the youth to respect women. She is proud of having never had to change the way she dresses for anybody. Although she knows some women take it as compliment when their partners point out their revealing clothes, she says that if they are uncomfortable, they should tell their boyfriends that their preferred style and lifestyle should be respected.
Describing her relationship with Javi as smooth sailing amidst the pandemic, the next queries are normally when they plan to seal the deal. “At this point, it’s not something I’m focused on. I’m very busy with work. Marami pong blessing and dumarating, one after the other,” said Sue, who has also been cast in ABS-CBN’s “Doctor Foster” remake as the mistress to Jodi Sta. Maria and Zanjoe Marudo’s husband-wife roles. “Also, for Javi, so much is happening for him, I think the focus is not on that aspect yet.”
In “Boyfriend No. 13”, Sue is yet-to-be-lucky-in-love romance novelist Kimverly Santillan. Finding “the one” is her life goal, and she is counting on destiny to deliver. She lives her life according to the cards, the stars, and her superstitions. Her every move is calculated to deliberately avoid misfortune and ensure that her life is as close to perfect by letting her many superstitions guide her way. Reading her daily horoscope, wearing lucky charms to ward off bad luck, and regularly consulting fortune tellers are some of her favorite go-to’s to being happy.
When she meets charming doctor Don Lee (JC De Vera), all signs indicate that he is her destiny. On one hand, there’s the rogueish and rugged officemate Bob (JC Santos) who needs a writing mentor. The problem is, the next guy will end up being her Boyfriend No. 13. With two very dashing choices, Kim agonizes over her choice.
John “Sweet” Lapus came on board as director, injecting a good dose of comedic flair and charm to the eight-episode series. Sweet also played a key role in the casting, with Sue and JC Santos being his first picks for Kim and Bob. For the role of Don, he wanted an actor who is your classic handsome guy – and JC De Vera was top on his list. The idea of having both male leads named JC just made the casting even more appealing.
Also starring Lotlot de Leon, Phi Palmos, Hershey Neri, and Bryan Sy, “Boyfriend No. 13” will premiere July 2, 7 pm, on WeTV Philippines. New episodes drop weekly and can be streamed for free.
