Morissette Amon's first homecoming concert on July 14

CEBU, Philippines — Morissette Amon is looking forward to finally stage a grand concert in her hometown of Cebu.

The 22-year-old was one of the performers during yesterday’s highly-anticipated inauguration of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2. In her quick visit, the Star Music artist expressed how she’s a mix of emotions for her looming show entitled “Morissette Is Made in Cebu: A Homecoming Concert,” to be held July 14 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

“I am both excited and nervous. Mao man gud ni ang akong very first homecoming concert ever since ‘The Voice’, ever since TV5,” Morissette quips in a brief chat at Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino’s UNO restaurant before singing at the inauguration affair.

“I’m very excited na i-share akong journey again with kapwa Cebuanos. And excited sa tanan surprises nga amo idala for ‘Made,”” the Aliw Awards and MOR Pinoy Music Best New Artist winner says.

According to Morisette, the title was a deicison made by the management and adds how she finds it fitting. Apart from being a homegrown Cebuana artist, Morissette likes to think that a person who is made is a person who has been through so much in life, someone who acknowledges experiences as something that contributed to the ultimate moment of the here and now.

Morissette, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on June 2 with family, was surprised when she heard about how so much people are looking forward to "Made," especially when told about how other artists opted to move their own concerts so as not to compete with hers, considering how well ticket sales are going so far.

"Noh? Mao ba?" Morissette, hailed as a breakthrough artist many times, exclaims in disbelief. "Ngano man?"

"I don't know how to... I'm surprised but in a way honored din kay ni give way pud sila. But also I hope matuloy pud ilahang mismo na concert. I don't like to get all the credit. Share-share ra man ta," Morissette says, almost breathless.

First laying her foundations in Cebu competitions like "Little Big Star Cebu," the Minglanilla native moved to the capital to see how she would fare. Morissette came onto national consciousness when she finished as a runner-up on TV5's "Star Factor" reality competition at 14 years old.

Afterwards, she was ushered into Sarah Geronimo's team after she auditioned for "The Voice Philippines" in 2013 to really pursue her singing career. Joining the competition had been a massive risk for the then teenager, who, despite her TV appearances in TV5, had to seemingly start all over again in the contest.

Morissette finished as a semi-finalist for Team Sarah after losing to Klarisse De Guzman who lost the championship to Mitoy Yonting.

She has also lent her talents to interpret songs in the Himig Handog songwriting competition and is now a regular performer in the ABS-CBN variety show "ASAP" as one of the Homegrown Divas alongside Angeline Quinto.

But with that success came a little bit of strife. Like any other public figure, Morissette is the target of scrutiny and has been compared to her own mentor, the Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo. She had also been accused of lip-syncing during a sing and dance number.

Morissette, alongside Angeline, also received backlash from Popsters (Sarah's fans) after allegedly making fun of Sarah's recent breakdown. Recently, she received flak for trying to "upstage" American Idol finalist Jessica Sanchez in an "ASAP" duet.

Morissette has long since explained herself, deflecting every single allegation, and was defended by others in the process.

However, despite that side of her career, people still can't deny that the singer's powerful belts, noteworthy whistle register, and command of the stage, among many other qualities indeed made a star out of Morissette.

Not only did she earn a standing ovation at the Asia Song Festival in Korea last year and become the first Filipino artist to be granted a V Live (Korean video streaming app) channel, but singer Jessie J also invited Morissette to sing with her during her concert after hearing the latter's rendition of her "Who You Are" which Morissette performed in "The Voice."

Morissette has also garnered praise from OPM institutions like Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. The Sarah G lookalike has constantly been dubbed as the next superstar and christened as "The Next Big Diva."

And Morissette couldn't be more honored.

"Kato na time nga giingnan ko mismo ni Miss Reg ato, dili nako ma-sink in gyud. Dili ko katuo nga ni-happen gyud to siya pero I'm so happy nga very generous si Miss Reg sa amo nga bag-o nga artists. Very, very supportive [siya], and yun very, very grateful nga bata pa lang ko iyang songs na akong mga ginakanta. To share the stage with her and for her to sing my songs pud, I'm very honored," Morissette says.

From a little dreamer, Morissette has transformed into an award-winning singer, beloved for her original songs and brilliant covers.

As Morissette's "Made" concert draws nearer, more artists are eyed to perform with her for the evening, while Cebuana singer and "The Voice Kids" contender Jolianne Salvado is set to open for Morissette.

Then it’s off to Australia for the young diva for a July 27 and 28 show with Darren Espanto.
