CEBU, Philippines – It looks like Chlöe Grace Moretz is about to get the full mermaid experience, because the actress has been tapped to star in the live-action film for “The Little Mermaid.” Moretz recently took to her Instagram to confirm the news to her fans and share how excited she is to take on the iconic role.
“Here it is!! I’ve been waiting months to tell everyone how excited I am to take on this beautiful journey with Working Title, Universal, and a beautiful script by Richard Curtis,” she wrote alongside a screenshot of an article from Variety, who first reported the story. “#TheLittleMermaid !!!! Here we go!!!”
Curtis also wrote and directed “About Time” and “Love Actually,” and previously wrote “War Horse” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary.”
The live-action film is still searching for a director, however. Sofia Coppola was initially the one to take on the project, but exited in June due to reported “creative differences.” Variety reports that Coppola actually left the film because she didn’t want to work with Mortez.
“The Little Mermaid” live-action film will give a fresh portrayal of the famous fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen, which follows a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.
Until Moretz puts on her tail, she’ll be keeping herself busy with a number of other projects. She is currently filming “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” for Universal, and just wrapped “Brain on Fire.” She will also be featured in Sony’s “The Fifth Wave” and also has “November Criminals” set to release next year.
