“The 400 Blows,” (Les 400 coups) directed by François Truffaut, is an intensely touching story of a misunderstood young adolescent who left without attention, delves into a life of petty crime.

“Pierrot le Fou,” directed by Jean-Luc Godard, puts the spotlight on Pierrot, who escapes his boring society and travels from Paris to the Mediterranean Sea with Marianne, a girl chased by hit-men from Algeria. They lead an unorthodox life, always on the run.

“Van Gogh,” directed by Maurice Pialat, is set in the late spring of 1890.  Vincent, under the care of Dr. Gachet, lives in a humble inn. Fewer than 70 days later, Vincent dies from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. We see Vincent at work, painting landscapes and portraits. Shortly before his death, Vincent visits Paris, quarrels with Theo, disparages his own art and accomplishments, dances at a brothel, and is warm then cold toward Marguerite.

“Jules and Jim.” (Jules et Jim) directed by François Truffaut, is set in Paris, before WWI, where two friends, Jules (Austrian) and Jim (French) fall in love with the same woman, Catherine. But Catherine loves and marries Jules. After the war, when they meet again in Germany, Catherine starts to love Jim. This is the story of three people in love, a love which does not affect their friendship, and about how their relationship evolves with the years.  (FREEMAN)
