Dennis Trillo: “Nothing offensive with our scenes”

One reason why My Husband’s Lover is a top rater and is widely followed on TV is because of Dennis Trillo. His portrayal of Eric, the lover of Vincent (played by Tom Rodriguez) is truly heartfelt and makes you say that Dennis is a damn good actor (as if we still don’t know it yet). If we recall, it was his portrayal of a gay character in the movie Aishte Masu” that won for Dennis a string of acting awards that made people notice his fine acting abilities.

Dennis has not done a gay role since that filmfest movie directed by Joel Lamangan that’s why his take on his character as Eric in My Husband’s Lover is giving him so much inspiration in his craft that’s why his performance seems flawless and oh so natural. It also gives him added sense of fulfillment that My Husband’s Lover is getting good feedback from the viewers. Of course, there is also a downside since there were negative reactions as well because of the show’s controversial story.

“We didn’t expect that we would have this kind of reaction,” said Dennis. “We are being watched, not just by the gay population but by women and men as well. I guess they can relate to the situation being presented in the story.”

Of course, the clergy has another thing to say about “My Husband’s Lover” with regards to the soap’s controversial nature. “Well, I don’t know if the priests could relate to the story but I do hope that they also take time to watch so that they’d know that we have a decent show. The scenes are presented and mounted well, thanks to our director Dominic (Zapata),” he added.

Dennis also said the clergy is just expressing their concern so that the production staff would be reminded of their responsibility with regards to the program’s content.

“We need to be careful of the scenes that we show on TV although we really take a conscious (effort) that we won’t go overboard. We know that even if we have an SPG rating, we ought not show anything that would be deemed distasteful. There’s nothing offensive with our scenes even if our show is not your usual ordinary drama. Besides, we are tackling a story that we don’t normally see on TV.

“We are saying that this kind of relationship is not lewd or vulgar. We are only showing the real feelings of someone who is in love,” said Dennis.

The actor’s followers may have grown in number since My Husband’s Lover started airing. And there had been lots of positive feedback because of Dennis’ derring-do to play the role of a closet gay.

“We didn’t know we’d get that kind of positive feedback with our performance. Tom and I are real men who are playing gay roles in the show. The people find a kilig factor in the set-up so we are probably doing something good that they can relate with.”

Dennis expressed reluctance to do gay roles after his gay take on Aishte Masu years ago. That’s why he can’t say if he’d do another gay when My Husband’s Lover goes off the air. He said that his understanding of gay roles improved now that he has tried it anew here in My Husband’s Lover.
