Victor Basa is gay in “My Husband’s Lover”

Victor Basa is playing a gay role in the forthcoming GMA series “My Husband’s Lover” which topbill Dennis Trillo, Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana. This is the third time that Victor is playing a gay role. He first did it in the indie film “Maling Akala” then did another gay role in two TV shows.

In “My Husband’s Lover,” Victor is playing the role of David, the best friend of Vincent (portrayed by Tom Rodriguez) and was his former boyfriend. He is a chef and is proud of being gay.

His last show in GMA 7 was “Cielo de Angelica.” After that he did mostly hosting jobs in various corporate events. He used to be an MTV veejay and he also wrote his own blog.

Where does he find more enjoyment – hosting or acting? “In hosting, you are conveying a message. In acting, you are conveying the emotion of the character that you are portraying. Acting is more fulfilling because you are playing a role,” Victor said.

He finds playing a gay role challenging. “I am playing a gay who is proud of my sexuality but I am not the flamboyant type. My peg for my role is a combination of many of my friends. My character as David is telling my best friend Vincent (Tom) na mag-out na siya. Hindi niya puwedeng itago at kimkimin what he is kasi mas lalo lang siyang magiging confused.  Gusto mo na ngang iwanan ang asawa mo kasi gusto mo iyong isang lalaki. Mahirap na maging bakla kasi may mga outside pressures like responsibilities sa asawa niya at sa anak niya. At sa sarili niyang idea,” he said.

“I find the role of David quite difficult in the sense that I don’t want my character to look stereotype. I don’t want it to look stereotype people might say it was just like any gay role that they have seen before.  So in playing my role, I have to be truthful in my scenes. There are scenes that I have to show that I am so much in love with Vincent. We also have intimate scenes because Vincent and I became lovers. Some scenes were kind of awkward to do at first. Minsan maraming taong nanonood sa set. Tapos may members ng crew. Parang nakakailang.

Tapos may intimate scene kami ni Vincent, we have a bed scene,” he related.

After doing mostly afternoon dramas for GMA 7, Victor is finally a primetime drama show for the Kapuso network. “But I really like my role. It’s kind of scary because some gays could be judgmental at times, just my opinion. And they are very critical when they watch a gay role. Dapat hindi stereotype ang role or else the gays won’t watch it. I hope the gay role that I am doing is not one dimensional. Like if there is an intimate scene where you have to show your feelings towards someone. They would know if you are not truthful with your role,” said the boyfriend of Divine Lee.

Victor says he is familiar with gays because he has an uncle who is gay plus he has many gay friends in the industry. “Dito sa role ko, I just have to show that love is for everyone. It doesn’t mean just because a gay person is in love with a guy, he was just after sex. A gay person can be truly in love with the guy,” he added.

“My Husband’s Lover” also features Ms. Kuh Ledesma, Chanda Romero, Roi Vinzon, Glydel Mercado, Pancho Magno, Karel Marquez, Bettina Carlos and Kevin Santos. It is directed by Dominic Zapata and will start airing on Monday, June 10 on GMA Telebabad.
