New player enters Cebu’s ride-hailing scene

CEBU, Philippines — Unified Transport Operation League (UTOL), a Filipino-owned transport network company (TNC), has entered Cebu, positioning itself as a competitor to existing operators in the lucrative Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) sector.

“The expansion in Cebu reinforces our mission to deliver reliable and efficient transport services throughout the Visayas, following our successful launches in Iloilo and Bohol,” said Atty. Orly Ocampo, UTOL’s legal head.

UTOL joins the competitive local ride-sharing market, which has long been dominated by regional players like Grab.

Cebu, known as one of the Philippines’ top tourist destinations, combines urban development with rich cultural heritage. In 2023, it welcomed over 2 million domestic and international tourists, cementing its position as one of the most visited locations in the country.

Metro Cebu, the highly urbanized economic center of the region, boasts thriving industries such as IT, business process outsourcing (BPO), trade, and manufacturing. This economic growth has heightened transportation demand, particularly in peak hours, holidays, and tourism seasons.

“Cebu’s rapid urbanization and growing transportation needs provide a significant opportunity for UTOL to bridge the gap in the current transport system by offering modern, convenient, and safe mobility solutions,” Ocampo added.

UTOL’s entry coincides with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) initiative to release 600 TNVS slots in Region 7, which includes Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. This creates new opportunities for TNVS operators and empowers local drivers.

“Our drivers and operators are like family to us,” Ocampo emphasized. “We provide comprehensive support such as car financing, insurance, registration, and legal assistance to ensure their security and peace of mind. Joining UTOL is designed to be a seamless and rewarding experience.”

The UTOL app, developed by an all-Filipino IT team, is now available on iOS and Android platforms. It features real-time ride tracking, an emergency button, and accessible customer support, ensuring passenger and driver safety.

To further support its driver-operators, UTOL has partnered with automotive dealers and maintenance providers to offer affordable vehicle financing and upkeep solutions.

Applications for TNVS operators are now open, with competitive incentives and support services included. UTOL aims to foster a sense of community and sustainable livelihoods for its driver network while enhancing the region’s transportation infrastructure.
