CEBU, Philippines — Recognizing the significance of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry stood firm in its dedication to environmental advocacies by actively engaging with key stakeholders to strengthen the sustainable waste management practices in Cebu.
In a pivotal meeting on June 19, CCCI and DENR- Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) emphasized the importance of complying with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law. The EPR Law, which was institutionalized to address plastic packaging waste and amend Republic Act No. 9003, known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, officially became law on 23 July 2022.
This groundbreaking legislation mandates that obligated companies or producers take full responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products ensuring proper and effective recovery, treatment, recycling, and disposal of residual plastics from their products, as well as adopting measures to improve plastic recyclability or reusability.
In response to the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) call for action, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce released a letter enjoining all its members to observe proper and responsible solid waste management practices as mandated by the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which serves as the guiding framework for establishing an effective and sustainable waste management system. The law advocates waste reduction at the source, proper segregation, recycling, composting, and the establishment of environmentally sound disposal facilities.
The collaborative efforts of CCCI, DENR and CCENRO are geared towards addressing the urgent need for solid waste management in Cebu, optimistic that their joint initiatives will pave the way towards a cleaner and more sustainable Cebu.
