Faith is the strength we need in times of rough sailing

LIFE’S ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

I believe that faith is the only strength we need in times of rough sailing. A few years ago, when I was told by my OB-Gyne that I have to undergo surgery because I was bleeding, I heaved a deep sigh and said a prayer in my heart. I lifted up to Him my life and I asked Him to be there in my operation and not forsake me. What a relief it was when the nurse told me, “Maam, I have to wheel  you back to your room. The operation is done.” I closed my eyes, and praised and thanked God for His mercy and kindness. True indeed, God is a God of mercy who never fails to answer our prayers.

A certain Mich shared her story of how faith saved her in her moments of despair in the book, “Living Water 2009.” “I was low in cash. Big expenses piled up the previous weeks, as well as calls to generosity. In Christian jargon, I was in “famine”. Coffers in red, I went begging…before God. But I wasn’t worried. I knew the Lord would rescue me again. I claimed His promises in Scripture and believed Him for His Word. True enough, things happened. I finally received a check related to some maternity benefit, and it was a sizable amount. Then came my birthday and three groups of people gave me substantial  cash gift. All in all, it amounted to a five digit figure. A life in Christ means a life of faith, and a life of faith means an abundant life. It means all our needs are met.”

On the other hand, a relative revealed that she has a strong faith in the Lord that her daughter will be cured of cancer but it  spread to her breast. She accepted  the situation by saying, “Maybe God has other plans.”

One may ask, “How can we live by faith? “ Lyn Mac of “Huffpost” and Dr. Steve McSwain of “www.stevemcswain.com website,” offer the following tips:

Acceptance. Before you can connect your desires you must accept where you are in this very moment. One must forgive yourself or others for what is occurring and be ok with everything. If you are broke and unsure of how you will pay your rent, you must accept this without judgment. If you or someone is sick, you must accept what is happening in your life and release the need to control or analyze. All transformation and miracles occur once you have accepted yourself as is.

Let go. Faith can often have an undertone control. Although we may turn to faith in times when we feel we have lost control, we still cling to faith as the bridge of source. Let go of trying to control the outcome and the need to know how things will work out.

Connect to the power of God within you. True faith is knowing that you are not separate from God. God exists within you as much as God exists outside of you. And in every living thing.

Use the spiritual practices of prayer and meditation on a regular basis. Do these things and you’ll not only discover you’re living by faith but your faith is real,  nurturing, and eternally satisfying.
