Life's challenges are beyond our control

LIFE'S ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

There are challenges and trials that will happen in the doorstep of life wherein we have no control of. Like my friend’s daughter who was diagnosed of 3rd stage breast cancer. She cried upon learning the truth and immediately called her mom.(She is working as a nurse abroad). Her mother consoled her by telling her that what happened to her is beyond her control. She said, “There’s nothing we can do about it because the parasite is already in your body. What you have to do is to surrender your illness to the Lord. He knows everything what’s happening to everyone of us. What is important is to appreciate the gift of life – your life. I know how it is to feel when you have cancer. I have been there in that journey. But look at me now, I’m still around. What is important is to look at life in a positive way. Smile, there is still hope that you can cling on – hope that you’ll be healed with God’s grace.”

An anonymous writer in the www.allaboutlifechallenges.org, exclaims, “All of us experiences major and minor life challenges. How we handle these struggles on a daily basis determines our physical, as well as our mental well- being. It takes only a single event to convince us we have no control over our circumstances.”

In any challenges in life, there are lessons that we can learn. Here they are as pointed out by Mo Seetubtim of “www.huffingtonpost.com:

You need to change.  Instead of looking at external circumstances and blame people for unfortunate events, look at yourself first and see if there’s anything you can improve. Can you change the way you live so that your life situation can improve? Whether it be changing your habits, attitude, or outlook, you need to change in order to improve your life’s situations. Failing to accept the truth that  life presents to you, you will forever fall into the traps you can never seem to escape.

You can’t control life but you can control yourself. There are circumstances in life that you can’t  control, i.e being born into a dysfunctional family, losing your family member at a young age, becoming a victim of an unforeseeable accident, or having a cancer. If you surrender to life, you become weak. However, if you realize that you are in control of yourself no matter what happens to you, you will not  ignore the unfortunate circumstances and use them as  springboards  for the better you.

You can’t change the way things are but you can change the way you look at things. As Brian Tracy said, “You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.”

You are actually a very strong person. You know that no matter what happens, you will just be fine. The strength you have built up over the years has become one of the most valuable assets you have. You know you have the willpower to combat anything in life.

As a reminder Buddha once said, “Time does not heal everything but acceptance will heal everything.”
