CEBU, Phillipines - The positive market reception and upbeat development of a local beverage chain is being attributed to the growing number of health-conscious Filipinos, the upward trend in the wellness industry and the increase of purchasing power of the public.
This was shared by Agri-Nurture Inc. - International Retail chief executive officer Phil Oakden who said that the increase of the middle-income class and higher spending capacity of consumers drive the booming health and wellness industry in the Philippines, thus affecting beverage chains that offer fresh fruit shakes and healthy snacks.
Big Chill was established in December 1994 with the concept of serving premium quality blended shakes made with 100-percent, fresh-cut fruits.
It was in 2011 that the food producer and trader Agri-Nurture Inc. (ANI) announced its acquisition over The Big Chill, Inc., which is a local seller of fruit juice and food products.
Oakden cited that the brand caters to a diverse age group across all market segments but most of the loyal customers are women and those who are health-conscious.
"Filipinos love it. It is very well-received in the country as more people are being conscious with their health and figure. There is also more disposable income for people to quench their thirst with various refreshments available in the market," he said.
Big Chill carries a wide selection of fresh fruit shakes, juices and specialty blends.
"Each cup is made to order and is guaranteed served fresh always. All of our beverages are in their most natural flavors with no preservatives, no added sugar and no artificial flavoring," he said.
Oakden further revealed that Big Chill is eyeing to grow its presence in the Philippine particularly outside Manila.
"We have found a franchise in Cebu and we will possibly open in the first quarter next year," he added.
To date, Big Chill has 60 to 70 shops in Manila. It also has an outlet in Hong Kong and shall open more branches in China early next year, particularly in Shanghai and Beijing.
Most of its shops and kiosks in Manila are conveniently located in shopping malls, universities and office buildings within the metropolitan.
It was the first time of Big Chill to come to Cebu when it joined the US Fine Foods Show last month. Oakden said that they participated in the expo to explore the local market further and showcase their products in Cebu.
Agri-Nurture Inc., a producer and exporter of wholesale fruits and vegetables, is also into the retail industry through its other brands such as Tully's Coffee. —/JOB (FREEMAN)
