When I look back on the year that was, one of the things I’ll take away is the pleasure I got from seeing the return to television of some actors I’ve missed watching on the small screen and one of them is Richard Gomez.

From that time on, he would live alternately in his mother’s or father’s home (who by then already had families of their own) until 1977 when both parents migrated to the States. At that point it was his paternal grandmother who took him under her wing and brought him up to be the man that he is today. Stories that he tells me of his childhood are, more often than not, closely linked to his Lola Lydia, the woman he lovingly calls Mama.

But in the early ‘80s, they were inseparable.


For at least three years, they were part of a group called the Blackbird Band which attracted SRO crowd at the Calesa Bar of Hyatt Hotel along Roxas Boulevard.
