Operators of the illegal gambling game “sakla” have turned to renting corpses to stage fake wakes, or arrange to handle gambling games during wakes to raise funds for the deceased’s family, an official said yesterday.

Pacifico Maghacot, chief of the city government’s Bureau of Licensing and Permit Office (BPLO), said his personnel padlocked Conspiracy Garden Cafe last Tuesday with police operatives led by Superintendent Nestor Abalos assisting them. The bar is located along Visayas Avenue, not far from the Quezon Memorial.

In his closure order, Belmonte said operation of the two business establishments should be stopped immediately for non-payment of city taxes and their failure to secure a mayor’s permit and licenses.
