To fill in the supply shortage for the year, the National Food Authority is set to bid out an import contract for 80,000 metric tons of corn.


In a press release NFA Deputy Administrator Ludovico Jarina said the contract will complete the 200,000 metric ton of corn required to fill in the supply shortage for this year.

The Department of Agriculture has allowed up to 400,000 metric tons of corn import this year in two separate tranches of 200,000 metric ton each based on reports of production shortfall of 1.8 million metric tons this year.

Ric Pinca, executive director of PAFMIL, said the industry imported 1.9 million metric tons of food wheat last year. This year Pinca said the industry would be happy to be able to import the same amount as it did last year.

Food wheat is the raw material for flour that is made into bread and other pastries.
