Senior Superintendent Alfredo Toroctocon, General Santos City police chief, said Vicente Bontoya, also a personal bodyguard of a businessman, was found dead in Purok San Lorenzo Ruiz in Barangay Apopong at about 8 p.m. last Saturday.

Toroctocon quoted reports as saying that Bontoya was cruising the Apopong highway on his motorcycle when he was gunned down.

Dr. Eric Tayag, acting head of the DOH’s National Epidemiology Center, said the team has been tasked to verify reports that a number of locals have manifested malaria-like symptoms in the past weeks.

"We are still looking into this. We are still waiting for the report of the team," he said.
