[Title] => Letter to the Editor - AFP troops can not keep polls peaceful
[Summary] =>
Former Congressman Celestino Martinez Jr. is right to call for military pullout in areas with possible "intense political rivalries." It is doubly right as he suggested for Comelec to send instead independent electoral watchdogs to ease tension in these areas in the run up to May elections.
His call should be endorsed by the Comelec and pursued by civil groups as the AFP has time and again demonstrated its incapacity at maintaining peace even in so-called "hot spots".

[Title] => Statement Melo Commission and its commander-in-chief
[Summary] =>
There is nothing new with the report by the Melo Commission finding notorious Gen. Jovito Palparan and other AFP commanders responsible for the serial killings of over 800 political activists since 2001.
It merely echoes what the families of victims and the entire human rights community have long exposed and protested both here and abroad. It only affirms the charges filed by the victim's families and human rights groups in various local and international bodies demanding government accountability amidst a climate of state terrorism and impunity.

[Title] => Letter to the Editor - Walking time bombs in our midst
[Summary] =>
The recent altercation between a police officer of Lapu-Lapu City and soldiers of the 2nd Light Reaction Company should prod the governor and other hawks in government from further militarizing Cebu.
Far from deterring lawlessness and violence from messing up the coming ASEAN Ministerial Summit, these soldiers are fast becoming the cause of chaos. For now, it is just a fistfight between, ironically, so-called "law enforcers" ending up with bruised egos. But what about the next time? Do we have to wait for a gunfight claiming civilian casualties before we cry foul?

[Title] => Letter to the Editor Travesty of justice
[Summary] =>
We are disgusted that the governor eagerly basked on a travesty of justice as it unfolded before her at the capitol Monday, 3 September 2006.
On that day, agents of the governor's PAIT Force (Provincial Anti-Insurgency Task Force) finally presented to her Gerard Lavadia and Sharon Abangan whom they arrested without warrant, detained incommunicado for three days, tortured and forced to commit self-incrimination.
