She was an inherited friend — introduced to me by Rosanna Roces. I still recall our first meal together — arranged by Osang — at the Red Crab restaurant in Tomas Morato.

The idea for this two-part piece came from the suggestion of Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, who also writes a column (every Tuesday) for this paper and I want to give her credit for it.

I will always remember Rosa Rosal as the beautiful, ageless, and soft-spoken host of “Damayan,” a public service television show in a government channel.  The show is the Philippines’ longest running program in its category to date.  Ms. Rosal is primarily an actress and  a Red Cross veteran who, personally and through Red Cross, has provided free medical services, livelihood opportunities, and scholarships to countless Filipinos in the country.

By order of succession, a President has his VP to take over in case he dies, resigns or gets impeached. A king has an heir-apparent if he goes or abdicates. Even a beauty queen will have to crown somebody else when her reign is over.

Only Rosa Rosal doesn’t have a successor as humanitarian.
