                    [Summary] => I was stunned–shocked is the better word – by a recent statement of a top government official that "Filipinos are a happy people" and consequently not prone to "a social explosion", revolution or civil war. This official narrated to me at luncheon that he had "traveled all over the Philippines" and found the people "gay and smiling" and able to endure all kinds of hardship. Yes, he said, the Philippines would certainly muddle along till the year 2004, "there will be elections", a change in leadership.

While rummaging in my library several days ago, I pulled out the two volumes of historian O. D. Corpuz’s The Roots of the Filipino Nation. I had already read the award-winning two-volume opus of this quiet brooding scholar who seldom appears in public.
