[Summary] => Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. – Mark 12:30

My six-year-old neighbor Michael and I were talking in my front yard when two new neighbor kids stopped by. After I asked them their names, Michael’s first question to them was: "Do you love God?" Sugar, a five-year-old boy, quickly responded, "No!" Michael gave him a look of disapproval and concern. When four-year-old Nana noticed he wasn’t pleased with the answer, she said, "Yes!"

You see, I have experienced both. My husband Michael and I separated in August 1999, but a few months later, we were back in each other’s arms and promised each other that we would work things out. We were about to start a new life together when he suffered his third asthma attack and died of cardiac arrest in July 2000, six months after we were back together.

Never shopping or fashion freaks, we faced a common challenge: To get some decent clothing for one of those snooty affairs we simply couldn’t miss for patriotic and other reasons.

Barneys, we agreed, was just the best place for such compulsory expeditions. Long before it became as famous and expensive as Bloomingdale’s, it was known as this friendly establishment on Seventh Avenue near 17th Street that sold nice men’s clothes at affordable prices.
