"These signs and billboards should not make the roadways unsafe for the motorists and pedestrians," Fernando said.

The removal of the signs started early this week during Fernando’s routine inspection of roads in Metro Manila.

MMDA chairman Jejomar Binay noted that motor vehicles traverse the major roads, particularly EDSA, at an average speed of 25.84 kilometers per hour based on data from last year.

The average speed has improved from 14.5 kilometers an hour in 1999 and 12 kilometers per hour in 1998.
