[Title] => Manila landmarks of the 20s
[Summary] => This week brings us back another decade in our series on Manila landmarks. Last week, we were in the 1930s. As we continue with our showcase of buildings and places in the metropolis, this week we look at landmarks of the Roaring 20s.
The city had grown by leaps and bounds in the two decades since the Americans took over. The scars of the Spanish-American-Filipino war had healed, business was booming and numerous edifices were being put up to accommodate this expanded commercial activity.

[Title] => City College of Manila construction at Mehan Gardens in the works
[Summary] => Manila Mayor Lito Atienza said the city government is now closely coordinating with the National Historical Institute (NHI) on the immediate construction of the City College of Manila (CCM) at the historical Mehan Gardens.
Atienza said he is trying to finalize the design of the CCM building, which will soon rise at the Mehan Garden along Arroceros street, near the Central station of the Light Rail Transit (LRT).
The mayor said the project would surely help the city government provide quality education to poor but deserving children in the countrys capital.

[Title] => Manila: A city less beautiful
[Summary] => Over 50 years ago this month, Manila was liberated from the Japanese. The city was devastated and over a hundred thousand lives were lost in the crossfire. Soon after, it started to rebuild. It became increasingly apparent though that the reconstruction effort was driven mainly by narrow-minded concerns of business those of post-war market forces, and not according to a rational layout. This had already been prepared based on a 1941 metropolitan-wide master plan.

[Title] => Relaunching Lawton
[Summary] => Last week we looked at the "Liberation of Manila." This week we feature a more current "liberation," that of the re-launching of Plaza Lawton. The plaza has just been given a much-needed makeover in a process that involved City Hall, stakeholders such as the Post Office, educational institutions nearby, as well as civil society represented by the Heritage Conservation Society. Not all of Manila, it seems, is going the way of the Jai Alai and the Mehan Gardens.

[Title] => Liberating Manila
[Summary] => This month, 57 years ago, the American Armed Forces swooped down on Manila to "liberate" the city from the Japanese. The battle was a bloody one ... and most of the blood spilled was Filipino. The battle for Manila was, according to military historians, the only major "urban" battle the Americans fought in the Asian theater of World War II. (Think Blackhawk Down, but a thousand times more brutal as the carnage lasted about one month and casualties ran into hundreds of thousands.)

[Title] => Maelstrom at the Mehan
[Summary] => All functional cities must provide good, well-linked places and spaces for living, working, playing and learning. That our metropolis does not is an indication of its current and pervasive dysfunctionality. We live hours from where we work. We study hours from where we live. We have little open public space left to play in and, more often than not, these are far from public transport routes.

[Summary] => The Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) is in its fourth year of advocacy and action. It recently issued a general report to its members on its triumphs in 2001 and the challenges for 2002.
