[Title] => Merry mix of old, new faces in Davao City polls
[Summary] => DAVAO CITY — It’s a merry mix of old and new faces that emerged from last Monday’s barangay elections in this city, the leading growth center in this part of the country.

The mix includes those endorsed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte under his Hugpong sa Katawhan sa Dabaw party (47 of the city’s 127 barangays), those affiliated with the camp of first district Rep. Prospero Nograles (37), and the rest, who ran without any political backing.

The incumbents succeeded with their built-in edge, while only four of 19 local mediamen who ran actually won. According to Commission on Elections’ Region 11 director Lirio Joquiño, only 5,000 of the expected 50,000 potential voters in the region have registered since the list-up started last Dec. 10.

Joquiño, however, said the Comelec offices in the region will be open during the holidays, except on Dec. 25, to accommodate registrants.

Regional Comelec director Lirio Joquiño said all the other cities, towns and provinces in the region already have their duly elected officials proclaimed.

"I hope (Davao City) will be able to do it soon," he said.

Davao City has at least 570,000 registered voters but only 80 percent reportedly cast their votes last May 14.
