After being forgiven by their victim from Cebu, three American sailors charged in court after mauling a Filipino taxi driver last month will now receive their punishment from the United States government.

CEBU - President Estrada has allegedly sent feelers that he would want to meet with taxi driver Marcelo Batestil when he comes to Cebu this week.

Batestil's lawyer Gerardo Carillo said a friend told him of the President's intention but that no confirmation was available from Malacañang.

The financial offer of the United States to Cebu City taxi driver Marcelo Batestil still stands, a US Embassy spokesman said yesterday.

Press Attaché Tom Skipper also assured the Philippine government that the United States will present the three servicemen, who mauled Batestil last Sunday over a fare dispute, when the trial starts next month.

As this developed, Foreign Affairs Secretary Domingo Siazon Jr. said the mauling incident proved that the Visiting Forces Agreement "works."
