MANILA, Philippines – Toshiba Corp., a staunch supporter of the Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) project, is connecting another 10 public high schools in Laguna to the Internet.

All public high schools in the province of Cebu will soon have 10 computer units each, provided that the schools concerned already have a “computer laboratory, an electrical line and a means of connectivity”.

Through an evaluation process, the Department of Education will determine which schools will be given first as the DepEd has to find out first which schools have complied with the abovementioned requirements.

With the continuing support of the BPI Foundation, Gilas (Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students) is moving towards its goal of providing internet connectivity to the country’s 5,789 public schools. The latest supporter of Gilas is the Doña Isabel Garcia Trust Fund, which recently gave an endowment of P1 million. Quezon province was the main beneficiary of the donation, with 10 of its schools recently connected to the net.
