The number of cases of induced abortion in the country has increased from 1994 to 2000 with the number of deaths reaching an alarming rate, the Department of Health said.

This was the appalling revelation of the research on induced abortion in the country conducted by the Population Institute, College of Social Studies and Philosophy of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

Dr. Josefina Cabigon of the Population Institute said that of the three million pregnancies every year, 450,000 ended in miscarriages while another 450,000 in induced abortion. Unplanned births reached 930,000 while planned births, 1,170,000.
