[Title] => Painter VC Igarta dies at 89
[Summary] =>
Expatriate Filipino painter Venancio C. Igarta died June 1 in New York City.
Born in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, VC Igarta came to the US as a migrant worker in the
1930s. He was of the same generation as the poet Jose Garcia Villa, who also
died in New York four years ago. On the wall of the painter's studio/apartment
hangs a note from Villa encouraging him to send his works to a New York
gallery.
Perhaps best known for his 1940 painting "Northern Exposure," which evoked
memories of the home country.
