The Philippines has the long-term potential of becoming an Asian leader of the electronic-commerce in the new millennium, it was disclosed yesterday in Chicago by Bob Curry, co-founder and technology director of Iemagine, the oldest American firm dedicated to software rental applications. Curry was a former lead developer for IBM software systems.

The global Internet economy is estimated at $2.8 trillion today, e-commerce accounting for slightly less than one-half of this figure. Iemagine.com, a leading US provider of rental applications (ASP) disclosed yesterday plans to help the Philippines boost its technological capability to compete with the rest of the world.

The announcement came on the heels of a report by the American Electronics Association (AEA) that the Philippines has become the fastest growing market in the world for US high-tech exports.

The AEA said "US imports from the Philippines grew at an accelerated rate of $7.9 billion in 1999, more than half of which came in the form of semiconductors."
