Today is the 116th anniversary of the famous Tres de Abril uprising by the Cebuano-based Katipuneros led by Pantaleon “Leon Kilat” Villegas, who hailed from Bacong, Negros Oriental. A month earlier, Leon Kilat and his Katipuneros finally decided that it was time to make their move and planned for an armed revolt against the Spanish Guardia Civil in Cebu.

One hundred sixteen years ago, a small bunch of Katipuneros led by Pantaleon "Leon Kilat" Villegas who hailed from Bacong, Negros Oriental bearing a letter from the Katipunan leadership convinced many Cebuanos that the time had come to rise up against the Spaniards that has ruled our land for four hundred years. The call for revolution became stronger after the execution of Dr. Jose Rizal in Bagumbayan on Dec. 30, 1896.

Today is supposed to be the 67th anniversary of Philippine Independence, however because of the enormous powers of the Office of the President, back in the days of Pres. Diosdado Macapagal, he ordered that henceforth the celebration of Independence Day be moved from July 4 to June 12, the date when then Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo waved the Philippine flag in his residence in Kawit, Cavite. Hence the question, “Can a President change our history?” In my book… he cannot!
