A massive anti-dengue operation was conducted by the City Health office in all barangays including school campuses here after a victim has been diagnosed to be dreaded dengue disease.

DOH Regional Director Susana Madarieta yesterday said fogging is not the ultimate solution to the worsening dengue problem in the region, saying that it does not guarantee that it will eliminate mosquitoes, especially its eggs.

"This will only kill adult mosquitoes but not its eggs and the larvae and fogging is not environmentally friendly," Madarieta said.

Dr. Milagros Mahilum Greif of the German Mosquito Research Institute in an e-mailed press release to The FREEMAN said previous field studies she conducted on mosquito breeding sites here disclosed that vulcanizing shops contribute a lot to the dengue problem.

She said owners of vulcanizing shops display old tires outside their shops which are filled with water when rain comes.
