[Title] => Fisherfolk invest in their future
[Summary] => Theirs is a story youll find only in movies like Pocohontas, a story too good to be true, a story of men and women who work to protect the environment, while investing in their future.
In a country where fishermen make big money from illegal fishing by using either cyanide or explosives, one man from barangay Macaleeng, Anda, Pangasinan had the vision to realize that such an activity would lead to the extinction of all sea creatures, leaving him with no means to earn a living.

[Title] => Firming up a learning culture in fisherfolk communities
[Summary] => Sunny Saturday mornings find the young kids of Barangay Mambuquaio, Batan, Aklan inside their barangay hall, busy with their crayons and pencils. They go through their artwork for the day, and in a few minutes, submit it to Linda Bolivar, the volunteer parateacher-custodian of the Mambuquaio Barangay Learning Resource Center (BLRC) in Iloilo.
Their artwork done, they huddle for a short update on the latest news concerning their fish sanctuary and the other activities of the most visible development project in their barangay, the Fisheries Resource Management Project.

[Title] => A fishful homecoming
[Summary] => Forty years ago, the fishers of Barangay Segapod, Maigo, Lanao del Norte could catch as much as 60 kilos a day by using simple fishhook or hand line fishing gear. Back then, a total of 42 species of fish could be found in the Pontoron Reefs. By the 1980s, many of these species vanished as a result of illegal and destructive fishing practices.
Now, the fish are returning to the waters of the Barangay Segapod. Thanks to the Fisheries Resource Management Project (FRMP), members of the community have become responsive to their role in fisheries and coastal resource management.

[Title] => Culturing mangrove crabs in ponds
[Summary] => A need to address the twin pronged issues of excessive fishing effort and persistent poverty in coastal communities of Panguil Bay paved the way to culturing mangrove crabs in pond. Lucky enough, this proved to be an easy and successful undertaking. The only constraint is fisherfolk in the Panguil Bay coasts of the province lack the needed capital. The inability to access capital together with the needed technical know-how, somehow affected the positive drive towards progress.
