City Police director, Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador, yesterday denied allegations that his policemen have been used as "goons" to harass opposition candidates, insisting that the Tuesday incident was a legitimate police operation.


"It was a legitimate operation about an armed person alarm. We did it similar with responding to an ordinary armed person alarm because it is our duty...I would like to emphasize that the PNP is an apolitical organization," Comendador said.

The police are now digging into the background of the man who was shot dead while trying to rob a beauty salon in sitio Tigbao, barangay Talamban, the other night.


According to ID cards recovered from him, the fatality was identified as Rico Lumantas, 57, of Clarian, Zamboanga City.


One of the IDs was issued by Military Intelligence Group-9 of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.  Police also found a list of fellow Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit members in Zamboanga and a memorandum receipt for a .45 cal. pistol.
