[Title] => Tethered to the Cloud
[Summary] => Last week’s onslaught from Typhoon Pedring and the day-long power outage that followed reminded me among millions of other Manileños how dependent we are on our digital devices, which are in turn, dependent on what the poet Dylan Thomas might have described in another time as “the surge that through the green fuse drives the flower.”

[Title] => Pulling the feeding tube
[Summary] => One lesson from the tragedy of Terri Schiavo: give your loved ones clear instructions early on about what to do in case you have the misfortune of lapsing into a "persistent vegetative state."
Its macabre, but it could save your loved ones a lot of grief. We all have to go one day, some unexpectedly much sooner than others. Seeing what has happened to Schiavo and her family, I now consider such instructions as important as getting funeral and cremation insurance (which I already have).

[Title] => JEWELS THAT SIT WELL
[Summary] => Isnt she a poisonous thing of a woman, lying, concealing, flipping, plagiarizing, misquoting and being as clever a crooked literary publicist as ever?" So said Dylan Thomas of the poet and eccentric Edith Sitwell who was famous, no doubt, but obviously not popular with everyone. She was definitely a splendid icon of her day and like many of the most impressive of icons was unknowable in age and encrusted in gems. From her earliest years, she was deeply aware of her curious apartness from the ordinary world.
