[Summary] => My son graduated from grade school last week. Like most parents I felt nostalgic and sentimental. I remembered his first day in kindergarten six years ago. I wondered if he would make a lot of friends, I wondered if he would be scared. I wondered if he would cry being left alone. (FYI, he did better than me because I sure balled my eyes out during my first day in school). I was hopeful he would enjoy the journey. I was hopeful that he would learn.

This is a far cry from the $17 per barrel just five years ago.

A lot has changed but the basics of supply and demand are eternal. There has been an increased demand for oil and other commodities, mostly from the two emerging super powers: China and India. The populations of both countries represent close to 40 percent of the whole world. As the middle classes of these countries grow, so do their appetite for crude. These new yuppies now want to drive to their destinations instead of just walking or biking.

For any China manager, two statistics are key these days: 1) average salary growth and 2) turnover. According to a recent article in Businessweek, the average salary growth is running eight to 12 percent from Guangzhou to Nanjing. Turnover for some jobs is now hitting 20 percent. These two key stats have just burst the China myth of unlimited labor supply. Guangdong province, for example, has 2.5 million jobs that need to be filled.

Hindsight 1. A year ago, HP fired Carly Fiorina and hired Mark Hurd. I thought it was a great move where they got a no-fluff, roll-up-your-sleeve CEO to replace a celebrity CEO. That stock is up 60 percent from last year.

The market for animation services continues to expand as online games have taken off, and big-budget feature films like King Kong and Narnia continue to depend more and more on CGI (computer generated images) technology. While this field is growing, the competitors are fierce. The competition from India, Korea and now Malaysia and Thailand is giving the Philippines a run for its money.

Then again with the way our government is going (or not going), exporters of goods and services such as BPO (business process outsourcing) service providers will continue to have their cost lowered in dollar terms (as the peso weakens) and enjoy dollar revenue.
