Last week, I wrote about one of the perks of my job: Being served food in the houses of celebrities I interview. There is, however, another fringe benefit being in media: Travel.

My State of National Television Assessment or SONTA is getting to be longer than the TSONA (True State of the Nation Address) of Senator Panfilo Lacson, former President Joseph Estrada’s SONIA or State of the Nation Inspite of Arroyo (reminder again to Erap: in spite are two words) and even President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).

(Conclusion)
In the beginning, I really had no plans of staying long in Startalk since I didn’t think the show was going to last long either. It was turning four that time and the life span of most TV programs is usually only five years. (Startalk is now nine years old and hopefully will still go strong in spite of recent developments – you know what I mean.)

This is an excerpt of my supposed speech in the recently-concluded 2003 Aliw Awards where I was nominated for the Best Male Stand-Up Comedian. I remember writing that speech on a tissue paper. Obviously, I didn’t win.

Traveling was easy for me then because my parents took care of everything – especially the fare.

At the airport, I would just follow my Dad in line – at the airline counter to check-in ourselves and our pieces of luggage and at the security check where we got frisked (crotch included) because there were still no metal detectors back then.

It was Feb. 13, 1998. It was the last time I was in ABS-CBN, my home for five years and a half.

The following day, I was leaving for the United States to try a new life there. But I had to go to ABS-CBN first to do some last-minute voicing for my farewell episode.

As soon as I was done with my voice-over, I gave one of my favorite segment producers, Ona Unico, a really tight hug and thanked him for standing by my side during all those years I was with the station.
