                    [Summary] =>

Joe de Venecia the eternal optimist really believes that Charter change is good for the country. I’m pretty sure he’s sincere, but unfortunately for Joe de V, many people have always suspected him of pushing the Chacha for his own personal agenda. After all, JDV is pushing 70 and we can understand if he feels it’s either now or never for Charter change.

                    [Summary] => Many years ago, there was an Alka Seltzer commercial where their cartoon mascot Speedy would sing a tune at the end – "Relief is just…. a swallow away." For this country, debt relief may not be a swallow away but if we don’t reduce our huge debt we can be swallowed away. If we can just pull off Speaker Joe de Venecia’s debt-for-equity proposal even by just 20 percent, the debt reduction will greatly relieve the burden on the economy.

                    [Summary] => No matter how you slice it, the worst problem a government can have in a fiscal crisis is a credibility gap. Senate President Frank Drilon and House Speaker Joe de Venecia were the guest speakers at the Manila Overseas Press Club’s (MOPC) Congress Night. JDV rolled out his usual optimistic and creative spiel. He outlined a 12-point program to generate new wealth in a variety of creative ways that have been covered by the media. One can probably get a copy of JDV’s new book, Development Agenda 2004-2010: Our Tasks for the Next Six Years from the Speaker’s office.

                    [Title] => Pork chops are not enough
                    [Summary] => With pork occupying most of our minds this week, it would help to get to the bottom of the barrel. The most plausible explanation for the origin of the term "pork barrel" comes from the practice of distributing rations of salted pork stored in wooden barrels to slaves. The term came into political use in the post-Civil War era in the US specifically for the dispensing of favors by politicians to constituents. The imagery of politicians dipping for lard into a barrel of salted pork to satisfy supporters caught the popular imagination.
