[Title] => Flash floods dampen Caraga folks Christmas
[Summary] => BUTUAN CITY Some 5,000 residents of low-lying areas across the Caraga region were forced to flee their homes and sought refuge in evacuation centers on Christmas Eve as floodwaters spawned by four days of heavy rains swept through their villages.
The number of evacuees may rise depending on whether the weather would improve, said Chief Superintendent Rene Jamolod Elumbaring, chairman of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), in a text message to The STAR.

[Title] => NPA landmine kills 9 troops in Surigao
[Summary] => BUTUAN CITY The New Peoples Army (NPA) claimed yesterday that nine Army soldiers were killed and an undetermined others wounded when the truck carrying them hit a roadside landmine planted by rebels in a barangay in Surigao del Sur last Saturday.
Reacting to the claim, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said yesterday the supposed ambush was "a product of the fertile imagination" of the NPA and did not take place.
