Just two weeks ago, I wrote a column advocating that the problem of rising income inequality needed to be high on the agenda of the next government.

Last week, China’s stock market actually crashed twice. In that period, an estimated $1.1 trillion in wealth was lost.  The Chinese currency  also depreciated two percent in one week. It is reported that China had to spend around half a trillion dollars to stabilize its currency.

Leadership has often been described as the capacity to translate vision into reality. Instead of visionary leaders, the world is seeing the emergence of a different type of leader – the demagogue.

A year ago, I wrote a column about income inequality with a warning from Pope Francis that this was the root cause of social ills. Oxfam, an international NGO, also said: “An explosion in extreme wealth and income is exacerbating the world’s ability to tackle poverty.”

The whole civilized world is hoping that by the time this column is published, the more than 190 countries meeting in the Paris Summit on Climate Change would have finally arrived at an agreement to curb global warming. The failure would lead to a global disaster whose consequences would be worse than  all the different forms of terrorism.

Nov. 27 would have been the 83rd birthday of Ninoy Aquino and while I only saw him once when he was lying in repose at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City  he is to me the quintessential modern-day hero.
