[Title] => A father’s legacy
[Summary] => Literature enthralls me, and a subject such as my favorite book immediately brings to mind the memory of a wonderful man, an educator who — knowing fully well the tests and difficulties along the road to maturity — in my tender years steered my inclinations toward nobler concerns.

[Title] => Literary Revolutions
[Summary] => Igot an unusual text message last week from a student, a few hours after our undergraduate Philippine Literature in English class. "Im appalled," my student said, "that we havent had a revolution in Philippine literature in the past 20 years! Philippine literature is stagnating!"

[Title] => My sister Glo
[Summary] => Its time I took off from my usual grim renderings on this space and yes, smiled? Its indeed time I turned my back on the harsh realities of our times over which I grow prematurely old. And churlish. Maybe I should now fondly remember, seek entry into the elusive territory that conceals the human tenderness in us all. It is almost 50 days since our sister Gloria, eldest in our family of seven, passed away last September 9. And not a day passes that I do not think of her. I wonder why I have not yet shed tears.

[Title] => Remembering Peacetime
[Summary] => Theyve long been dead, I suppose, Filipinos who were still around during that supposedly most idyllic period in our history now called Peacetime. Oh yes, there must still be a few survivors, men and women in their 70s, 80s and 90s, who look on that decade just before World War II as the Philippines honeymoon with peace. It was a breathtaking calm, a stride through Arcadia, a handful of stardust. The few oldtimers still around gush and shed a happy tear when they remember Iyong panahon ng peacetime.
