[Title] => DENR chief eyes relief of police force in Mauban
[Summary] => Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Michael Defensor is poised to recommend the relief of the entire police force detailed in Mauban, Quezon after P4.2-million worth of illegally-cut lumber were confiscated over the weekend in the province.

Defensor expressed disbelief that police authorities failed to monitor the transport of the illegally-sourced timber in the area even as he noted that the police station in the province is located along the highway, which serve as the only entry and exit point for trucks conveying the wood.

Rep. Robert Ace Barbers (Lakas, Surigao del Norte) said his impression is based on the amounts the Department of Budget and Management set aside in the 2002 budget for horseracing and boxing agencies and the de facto housing department, the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

The council, chaired by housing czar Michael Defensor, is allocating P56.5 million for next year.
