When it comes to paintings, I don’t have a technical eye, though I can recognize skill and talent to a certain degree.  Generally, I go with what a piece does for me. I look for stories. I like it when a painting makes me travel to the outskirts of my imagination. This is also why I look for imperfection in pottery. I like a bowl that didn’t quite find its symmetry. An art enthusiast friend, on the other hand, insists you have to know what’s good and what isn’t, period, and not waste your time.
