Acting Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan said yesterday he has ordered the six-month preventive suspension of nine officials of the DPWH-Region 7 office who were supposedly involved in the anomalous purchase of lampposts used during the ASEAN Summit in Cebu last January.


Bonoan said the preventive suspension was in compliance with an order of Office of the Ombudsman, which found ample grounds to charge them for the lampposts’ alleged overpricing.

                    [Summary] => Acting Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan yesterday said he will immediately seek an investigation into the identities of the owners of a private beach resort in Cebu where 30 pieces of the overpriced decorative lampposts were allegedly ordered transferred by his predecessor, Hermogenes Ebdane. 


It was reported that Ebdane ordered the installation of the 30 streetlights in the private Porto Fino Beach Resort in Lapu-Lapu City, on Cebu’s Mactan Island.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now racing against time to complete priority road projects of the government before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) enforces a ban on infrastructure programs when the campaign period for the local elections starts on March 30.


Under Comelec guidelines, the DPWH will not be allowed to bid or release funds or award new projects 45 days before and after a local election.
