A dissertation on style

- Lia Alejo -

MANILA, Philippines - “Fashion is only the attempt to realize art in living forms.”

The man behind these words, Sir Francis Bacon, was by no means an expert in fashion; but you have to admit, he had a point. The group behind The Artisan, an independent brand, shared this medieval knight’s view, and came together with the goal of bringing the art of style back into the lives of Manila fashion devotees. Thus was born “A Dissertation on Style,” an event meant to return the focus from the current capitalist state of fashion back to the true essence of clothing and style.

“A Dissertation on Style” is a pop-up shop and clothing exhibit, featuring the works of nine independent brands: Zoo, I Love You Store, Stylebreak, The Gallery, Wip Caps, Unschld, Blackbook, Crazy Eddie’s and The Artisan. Unlike ordinary bazaars, “A Dissertation” will present the featured clothing like art in a gallery. According to Enrico Suarez of The Artisan, this will allow the brands to “express themselves in their rawest form.” Doubling as a pop-up shop, viewers may also choose to purchase these pieces of wearable art.

The event is also an attempt at keeping the Manila fashion industry at par with the international fashion scene. Enrico says, “It’s about time Manila starts to get with the ‘pop-up shop’ trend because it’s been done in Europe, the USA, and Japan.”

Ultimately, “A Dissertation” will be a celebration of the true meaning of style. There will also be live DJ sets by Sarah Marco & Bryan Kong (Taken By Cars), Joey Osmeña, Mano Lotho, Cholo Hermosa (Ernville), and Ardee Gonzales.

This visual dialogue on style will take place today, 6 p.m. at NOKN?WHOW, located on the third floor of 9590 Feron Bldg. Kamagong corner. Bagtikan St., Makati City.
