A gift of healing
December 11, 2005 | 12:00am
A famous song goes that a childs wish for Christmas is for him to have his two front teeth. Who would not want to flash a great smile during a very important time like this? Some people would rather have a brand new car, a salary increase or a free trip. These all sound exciting. But if given the chance to express the deepest desire of your heart this yuletide season, what would yours be?
How true it is that the most valuable and cherished gifts are not the material ones, although they may symbolize loving relationships among persons. Let us rekindle our hopes of inner healing for ourselves and our families. This is a very basic ingredient in attaining peace in the world. But what is inner healing?
Inner healing is a psycho-spiritual process one undergoes to become whole. Just as our bodies get sick and wounded, we also experience brokenness within. One of the most difficult challenges we often face is overcoming negative attitudes. How many families have been torn apart by quarrels and hurts? Many of these have been brought about by the deep-seated insecurities and moments of rejection we may have been going through since childhood. Do we influence the way we look at ourselves and how we relate with our significant others?
How many of us have found ourselves eventually doing what we promised to avoid? Is this a mere exercise of the will? Can we simply change paradigms we have grown accustomed to over the years in the snap of a finger? Discovering who we really are is to allow the grace of the Creator to illumine the dark, adulterated nooks in our being and to let His love be the genuine anchor of our identity.
Who needs inner healing? We all do, in varying degrees, depending on how healthy our family life has been. Even those born into happy homes need it as well because no one was raised perfectly and also because they continue to confront trials. It is very important that we become aware of the process of inner healing and how we can be better persons each day, in the light of how God has made us, mirrors of His goodness. Individual wholeness and healthy self-esteem play significant roles in all our daily responsibilities: the values we choose to prioritize, the decisions we make, the goals we set, the manner in which we behave.
One of the best Christmas gifts we can give our families is the gift of healing, accepting that we need it and that understanding how the process is maximized. One of the best wishes we can ever have is that each individual be given the grace to overcome spiritual and psychological barriers. As a person blooms into his best self, families, communities and countries start to get filled with loving and purpose-driven members.
