Pinoy seaman missing after ship collision

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed that one of nine Filipino crewmembers of a container ship is missing after a collision off the northeast coast of England recently.
Based on reports from the Licensed Manning Agency (LMA), the seafarer was onboard MV Solong when it collided with oil tanker Stena Immaculate at the North Sea on March 10.
“The seaman was last seen at the bow of the vessel, the area of the ship that caught fire after a massive explosion,” the DMW said.
It added that the other eight Filipino seafarers on board were safely rescued and brought to a hotel in Grimsby, London where they are waiting for repatriation.
“The official investigation into the cause of the incident is being undertaken by UK authorities in coordination with the flag states of the vessels,” the DMW said.
According to the DMW, the LMA has informed the family of the missing seaman about the situation and has committed to provide them with daily updates.
The DMW said it is in close coordination with the LMA and the families of the affected seafarers to ensure that all necessary assistance and support are being provided during their difficult time.
