UST, La Salle finally get going

MANILA, Philippines — Santo Tomas staved off a strong resistance from University of the East for a 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15 breakthrough win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
Anticipated to vent their ire on the Lady Warriors after a tough debut loss to Far Eastern U, the Golden Tigresses encountered a gritty dogfight instead, at least in the first three sets, before pulling away in the fourth to enter the winner’s circle.
Seasoned spiker Regina Jurado and super sophomore Angge Poyos connived with 22 and 21 points, respectively, to finally set Santo Tomas’ redemption tour in motion.
Jurado had 18 hits, two blocks and two aces laced by eight digs as Poyos, the UAAP Season 86 Rookie of the Year, put up 14 attacks.
In the other game, La Salle (1-1) rebounded with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 win over Adamson (1-1) to quickly avenge its deflating opening loss against rival and reigning champion National U (2-0).
Alleiah Malaluan (16) and Angel Canino (15) bounced back while Shevana Laput was steady with 10 points for the Lady Spikers, who needed only 88 minutes to declaw the Lady Falcons, who were on a high from a win against Ateneo.
