MANILA, Philippines — Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala bowed out of the qualifying round of the Singapore Tennis Open after being swept by Switzerland’s Simona Waltert, 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday.
A win would have punched Eala a ticket to the main draw, but the World No. 167 Swiss stunned the 19-year-old Asian Games bronze medalist.
Waltert punched in nine aces to Eala’s two. She also won 29 receiving points to her opponent’s 14.
Waltert will now take on Australia’s Alja Tomljanovic in the round-of-32.
The 24-year-old has won three of her four clashes with the Philippine bet.
Eala earlier won in the first round of the qualifiers against Japan’s Sara Saito.
Just a couple of days ago, she was stunned by lower-ranked Dalila Jakupovic to bow out of the W100 Bengaluru tournament.
