Depth of field shines at Philippine Open despite top Order of Merit absentees

MANILA, Philippines — Despite the absence of five of the Top 9 players from last year’s Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) rankings, who are focused on preparations for the upcoming International Series in India, the field for the Philippine Open remains robust and star-studded.

Asia’s oldest national golf championship, offering a prize purse of $500,000 (approximately P29 million), kicks off on January 23 at the Manila Southwoods’ Masters layout in Carmona, Cavite.

Leading the charge are former Asian Tour OOM champions Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand and American Sihwan Kim. Janewattananond, the 2019 OOM winner, brings his wealth of experience and shot-making finesse, while Kim, who captured the OOM crown in 2022, is another formidable contender with a proven track record on the international stage.

The Philippine contingent will be headlined by two-time Philippine Open champion Miguel Tabuena and former winner Angelo Que, both of whom have showcased remarkable consistency and resilience in previous editions.

Tabuena, who finished seventh in last year’s OOM and posted a runner-up finish in 2023, will be looking to build on his strong momentum.

Joining the mix is Thai standout Suteepat Prateeptienchai, ranked No. 5 in the OOM, alongside Australian Travis Smyth (No. 8) and fellow Thai Sadom Kaewkanjana (No. 10), all bringing firepower to the championship.

While reigning OOM winner John Catlin and several top-ranked players, including Ben Campbell, Richard Lee, Lee Chieh-po and MJ Maguire, have opted to focus on the International Series in India slated January 30 to February 2, the depth of the Open field remains formidable.

Adding to the field’s strength are a host of international stars, including seasoned Asian Tour winners Chan Shih-chang, Nitithorn Thipping, Rattanon Wannasrichan, Steve Lewton, Taichi Kho, Gunn Charoenkul, Ian Snyman, Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Prom Meesawat and Kazuki Higa. Each of these players has consistently proven their mettle on some of the region’s toughest courses.

Chase Koepka, an International Series campaigner and younger brother of five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, also bolsters the field, bringing with him the grit and competitive edge honed from international play. Former Japan Open winner Aguri Iwasaki is another notable name, adding an extra layer of international appeal.

On the local front, the Philippines is well-represented, with veterans Justin Quiban, Tony Lascuña, Sean Ramos and LJ Go carrying the nation’s hopes. Additionally, Japan Golf Tour regular Justin delos Santos will make his Philippine Open debut, aiming for nothing less than a breakthrough performance.

The local campaign is further strengthened by notable names from the Philippine Golf Tour, including Jhonnel Ababa, Reymon Jaraula, Guido van der Valk, Keanu Jahns, Clyde Mondilla and Hyun Ho Rho. Their collective experience and familiarity with local conditions could prove pivotal in the title chase.

Meanwhile, fresh talent also joins the fray, with former junior world champion Kristoffer Arevalo, Leandro Bagtas and Gab Manotoc advancing from the host club’s 18-hole qualifier.
