Hoey shines with 56-foot eagle putt
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ Rico Hoey sizzled with a six-under 64 spiked by a roaring eagle on the last hole to leap to within three off the pace halfway through the Sony Open Friday in Hawaii.
Hoey, in the hunt for his first PGA Tour victory, followed up his opening 69 with a hot 33-31 card in cloudy conditions at the Waialae Country Club to climb 57 spots to joint 11th.
After a modest one-under last Thursday, Hoey came charging and gunned down six birdies, including three straight from the 11th, to offset two bogeys. He then made a spectacular eagle-putt from 56 feet on the par-5 No. 9 to cap his fiery round.
With his 133 aggregate, the 29-year-old Pinoy moved within striking distance of Patrick Fishburn and Denny McCarthy, who shared pole position at 130 after shooting a 65 and 66, respectively.
One shot back with 131s were Kensei Hirata of Japan (63), Eric Cole (67) and Paul Peterson (67).
