MANILA, Philippines — Following a stabbing incident at the New Bilibid Prison that left an inmate dead and two others injured last week, four NBP personnel have been relieved from their posts.

Inmate Ricardo Peralta was killed. Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada were injured.

“This incident indicates a lapse in our security measures. It is essential that we hold people accountable for this,” Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said.

Chief Inspector Louie Rodelas as well as corrections officers 1 Christian Alonzo, Joshua Mondres and Glicerio Cinco Jr. were relieved from their duties.

The Jan. 2 incident at the NBP compound in Muntinlupa raised concerns about the national penitentiary’s security protocols.

Catapang, who was on leave, took swift action upon his return on Saturday.

“Our personnel should be alert and vigilant to enhance the safety protocols that govern the custody and management of inmates at all times,” he said.

The BuCor has requested the Commission on Human Rights, National Bureau of Investigation and Philippine National Police to conduct independent probes.
